Subtraction skills
Subtraction is the process of taking one number away from another. For example, if you have 5 apples and you eat 3, you are left with 2 apples.
Steps to Teach Subtraction:
1. Use Concrete Objects: Begin with physical objects like blocks or counters to demonstrate subtraction. For instance, start with 10 blocks and remove a certain number to show what happens.
2. Visual Representation: Draw pictures or use number lines to visualize subtraction problems. This helps children understand that subtraction means moving backwards on the number line or reducing the quantity.
3. Simple Subtraction Facts: Start with simple problems where no number is greater than 10. For example:
– 8 – 3 = ?
Explain that this means starting with 8 and taking away 3 to find out what’s left.
4. Practice with Examples: Provide plenty of examples for practice to reinforce the concept. Gradually increase the difficulty by introducing numbers closer to 20.
Example Problem:
Problem: 15 – 7 = ?
Explanation:
– Start with 15.
– Take away 7.
– Count backwards from 15: 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9.
– So, 15 – 7 = 8.
